Meeting the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights and others in Athens

Our member Dimitris Voutsinos had the pleasure of making some lobbying on KEPEP case on July 13. He joined a seminar about deinstitutionalization (DI) which was organized by the Ministry of Health.


During the seminar Dimitris Voutsinos had the opportunity to raise the attention for:
 -The need for open institutions
 -The need for a stop to new admissions in these institutions
 -The opportunity to take advantage of the other experience and knowhow other EU countries have had on DI through interstate  collaboration, like in the case of reform of Psychiatric Institutions in Greece.

He met and spoke about KEPEP with:

a) Mr. Jan Jarab, the Regional Representative for Europe in the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, who specifically mentioned KEPEP as a subject of deep concern of UN.

b) Mr. Jan Pfeiifer, member of CPT committee as well as the Committee against torture and ill-treatment of the Council in Europe, who together with Jan Jarab is eager to help and arrange a visit to KEPEP next time they are here.

c) A member of the Board of Sikiaridion Institution of disabled children

d) Mrs Marina Bessiri, a person with disabilities and survivor of institutions that "managed to escape out of luck"

e) A member of the tandem NGO, that is participating in the new board at the Rehabilitation Centre for Disabled Children in Voula, Athens,

f) Mr. George Nikolaidis, from the institute of childrens health in Athens, representative of Lumos in Greece.

g) Mrs Mary Theodoropoulou, Roots Research Center, representative of the Opening Doors campaign in Greece, who verified her intention to put KEPEP in the next Opening Doors campaign of EuroChild

h) Mrs. Efi Anastopoulou, scientific aide to the Minister of Health
